Elan Artists Showcase

Elan Artists Last week I attended one of Elan Artists' dance band showcases. They featured their very popular band, The Source, as well as their retooled version of Nation (they added some new lead singers). It was an awesome evening at the Ritz Carlton Georgetown, with delicous cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. But most of all, it was great, live music. I was really impressed with both bands.

Nation has two new lead singers - who sounded amazing. Nation's repertoire includes the very best of Funk, Soul, Motown, Sinatra-style Jazz & Swing, Rock, 80's, 90's, and Contemporary. What I personally loved about them was that one of their musicians doubles as a sax player and vocalist - and he was rad. It's always awesome to get some horns in on the action - I think horns add a ton to the evening. I also really liked Nation's vibe - they were laid back while still being full of energy and producing a high quality performance. FYI, this variation of Nation is so new, they haven't updated their website yet. I was told they'll be getting new footage and clips up soon - but I'd give Elan Artists a call directly if you want more info in the meantime.

In my opinion, The Source has a different vibe. This is a great band for people looking for a more upscale but still semi-traditional wedding band - i.e. they had choreographed moves and had a bit more showmanship. But like Nation, they sounded fantastic and brought really powerful energy. They also cover a wide variety of songs and styles through Jazz & Swing, Soul, Motown, R&B, Rock, Funk, Disco, Reggae, Hip Hop and more.

Everyone has their own personal tastes - based on this showcase I'd recommend either! Both did an excellent job with a variety of styles, sounded great, and brought positive energy to the room. Hearing bands live is the #1 way to tell how they really are, what they sound like, and whether you like them. I think it's fantastic how often Elan Artists do these showcases - if you're on the lookout for a band, keep your eyes peeled to their website and definitely attend their next showcase!

Party Supplies from Oh Joy! at Target

Oh Joy! for Target A quick post today to give you a heads up that Target is launching their partnership with Oh Joy! on March 16th. Target partnered with top Pinterest pinners to create party collections and this is their first launch. There will be four Oh Joy for Target collections this year—Spring, Summer, Fall and Holiday—each in stores for six weeks only.

After the cold spell we've had around here, her party supplies will bring a lovely breath of spring air. The collection looks pretty awesome - dynamic colors, very cute supplies like cake stands, banners, party hats, lanterns and more. Based on my past posts about things you need to party and putting a party together at the last minute, you all should know I'm a big fan of Target and of using small items to make things festive. You don't have to go crazy and you don't have to craft. Sometimes, splurging on some fun purchases is what makes it easy - which means you get to have fun and stop stressing!

Let me know if you all pick up anything fun. I'm looking forward to checking it out. And no, this is not a sponsored post. I just really love Target and cheap, happy, party goods!

The Bachelor: when you don't conform

I have a confession to make. I watch The Bachelor. And The Bachelorette. I think it might be my guiltiest pleasure, but I just can't help myself. Mindless, crazy, reality television is sometimes awesome. Glad I got that off my chest.

This season of the Bachelor was one of the most controversial. Juan Pablo is pretty much a d*ck. I won't go into all the details, but over the course of the show he's shamed the women he hooked up with, repeatedly used his daughter for questionable decisions and behavior, said "vulgar" things to women, and generally came across as an emotionally stunted boy-man.

All that being said, the finale really struck me (I swear this is going somewhere). For those of you that missed it, he didn't propose. He gave the woman who had professed her love for him the rose, and told her he liked her a lot. On the "After the Final Rose" he was repeatedly pressured to tell his girlfriend that he loved her - questioned over and over about what his real feelings for her are, whether he loves her, why can't he just TELL HER THAT HE LOVES HER?? The hysteria and panic that accompanied this obsession with love really creeped me out.

Here's the thing: he was a d*ck. He wasn't a great man. He used the excuse "I'm just being honest" way too often to excuse bad behavior and mean comments. BUT. Can we stop for a moment and respect the fact that he didn't succumb to the pressure to propose? That sometimes real love stories take years to develop? That it's actually way more offensive for a man to propose because he's "supposed to"?

I love The Bachelor. It's ridiculous. But the extent to which the producers cling to this fairytale, this quest for love, this perfect ending is really quite frightening to me. Hopefully audiences know better than to trust in it. But when a host is looking at a couple who are dating, with one person who has said "I love you" and the other who hasn't and says in all seriousness "I don't know what I'm looking at!!" - what does that tell people? Are you kidding?? There are probably thousands of couples around the world experiencing and living that situation. Relationships are very often unbalanced. They continue to function. They continue to be happy. They're valid.

I guess where I'm going here is that I get really sad when the wedding industry (including wedding reality shows) so strongly perpetuates this fairy tale. That things have to be a certain way. That love looks a certain way. That love has to be clean, black & white, in love or not in love. I think it makes those in uncertain situations feel even worse, or doubt themselves. It makes the people who want a proposal from their partner anxious. It makes the person about to say "I love you" even more fearful that it might not be returned. More broadly, it plays into all these notions of perfection when it comes to weddings - the perfect day, the perfect dress, the perfect ring. I'm so tired of it.

I get that I'm talking about a really silly reality show. But it's on national television. And I think even ridiculous shows should draw the line somewhere and recognize that the world (and your crazy show) won't and doesn't fall apart when relationships are messy, unbalanced, and imperfect.

Juan Pablo, you're quite the d*ck, but I'm glad you didn't propose if you weren't feeling it.

Lip Sync Battle: The party game of the future

On a long drive to my in-laws’ lake house this summer, my husband and I were bored and trying to keep ourselves occupied when we happened upon the greatest idea ever (slight exaggeration).

We’d recently watched Jimmy Fallon’s lip syncing contest videos and so to pass the time we started asking each other what song we’d have various family members sing. And that’s when we decided as our new family tradition, we’d have an annual lip-syncing contest. And it would be amazing.

Backing up slightly, if you haven’t seen Jimmy Fallon’s lip-sync battle videos, watch them. now. please.

Jimmy Fallon Lip Sync Battle Part I

Jimmy Fallon Lip Sync Battle Part II

You’re welcome.

Here’s the thing: it’s so much better than karaoke. You don’t need to be talented. You just need to be willing to make a bit of an arse of yourself. And that is why I believe lip-sync battles are the party-game of the future. They can be done in your living room. They can be done at a wedding (hint hint). They can be done at a birthday party. Whenever you do it - you will have fun.

We had a BLAST doing it over our Christmas holiday. A blast. Now, keep in mind, my whole family happens to be performers in one way or another. We’re also people who don’t half-ass anything. So this crowd was dedicated and they BROUGHT IT. My sister learned all the Korean lyrics to Gangnam Style. My brother-in-law brought down the house with the always classic, “Dick In a Box.” I pulled out the *NSYNC dance moves I learned 10 years ago (long story) and brought the early aughts to my living room. There were costumes. There were knee slides. The songs ranged from Michael Bolton to LL Cool J. It was amazing.

There were not, however, videos (that was one of the rules). But I wanted to share this idea because I truly think it’s a sure way to guaranteed fun.

I do highly recommend rules. Here were some of the basics we shared with our family:

  • The battle will consist of each contestant lip syncing three songs. The songs may be any song - from any era, any genre, as long as you are able to provide the audio

  • For time’s sake, we ask that each contestant choose approximately 1 minute (it can be slightly over or under) of each song. We recommend one verse and one chorus, for example.

  • A hair brush microphone will be provided, but not required.

  • Dancing, movement, etc are encourages, though please note this battle will be taking place in our living room in front of the fireplace, and next to the Christmas tree, so space is somewhat limited.

  • There will be three rounds, with each person performing their first song, then second, then third. Each contestant may choose their order.

So let’s make this the new trend, eh? And if you decide videos are allowed at your own battle, please share them with me.

P.s. This also ties in to a great discussion that's been happening on A Practical Wedding for a while now regarding creating your own holiday traditions. Go check it out if you can cause it's an important conversation for all engaged and married folks - navigating the holidays is never easy. But having lip sync battles to bring families together might just be the trick.

P.P.S. I wanted to update this to add a link to a wedding who did a lip sync battle at their holud - You’ve got to check it out ;)

Tips on hiring a wedding band or dj // DC wedding planner

Per my bio, prior to moving to DC and launching my own company, I worked for a high-end music production company that produced bands and DJs for upscale events and weddings in New York City. The owner was a fantastic businesswoman - and working with her taught me a ton about owning a small business, how to offer high quality services and products, and especially about what a wedding looks like from a vendor’s point of view.

Because of this background, I’m admittedly incredibly picky when it comes to DJs and bands. So here is my advice to you, some thoughts and things to consider when interviewing a DJ or band:

LIVE, LIVE, LIVE

For bands, especially, you’ll often be shown video and/or you’ll listen to some audio recordings of the band. Make sure you’re listening to or seeing real, live footage. You want to make sure the band and performers you hire are great in person, live. That’s difficult to prove since you can’t crash a wedding and since getting good quality live footage at a REAL event is difficult (the background/crowd noise can really affect the quality). So I generally recommend looking for a company that recorded their performers live - usually in a studio but sans crazy mastering and without too much editing.

Who the hell is that?

Make sure the performers you see in your meeting (or hear) are the actual people who will be at your event. Sometimes companies will sell you by using certain videos or recordings of people who are actually already booked elsewhere or frankly, don’t even work for the company anymore. Ask for a clause in the contract to guarantee the same performers - and real sticklers can even ask that all the performers be named in the contract. Note, however, that these are people and people get sick, get hurt or get pregnant (!) and might not be able to be there due to an emergency - so I’m sure the company will also insert a clause to cover emergency situations which is more than reasonable.

How do they run the event?

Everyone has their own style. So this is my own personal opinion based on attending and working many events and weddings: I think the music should motivate the crowd and should do the talking. Be sure there are no cheesy announcements and your DJ or band leader isn’t mic happy. No one cares about them. They care about you, they care about dancing, they care about having fun. Get off the mic.

Whether hiring a DJ or a band, I recommend that you avoid strict sets. A good band leader or DJ will be reading the crowd constantly and changing the music accordingly. My old boss was incredible at this - she specialized in a cuing system with her band so that there weren’t ever basic set lists. Instead, she visually cued them to go into another song, based on what she thought worked best for that specific party. Incredible.

Ask them if they integrate music - “integrate” is a great word and is what I personally think a good party needs. When you integrate music - for example, seamlessly transitioning from Otis Redding to Rihanna - you keep people of ALL ages on the dance floor. If instead, you have a motown set, and then an 80’s set, and then a 2014 set - only the people interested in that music will be on the dancefloor. Keep your guests on their toes by not knowing what danceable song is coming next and you have a packed dance floor.

Performers

Pay attention to what kind of performers your band members are. I think there’s a fine line between high energy, exceptionally talented singers, and over-the-top, can tell they wish they’d made it as a pop star, barmitzvah-motivating pushiness. A good performer should energize and motivate the crowd by being rad. That’s it. They shouldn’t NEED to get out in the crowd. They shouldn’t need to shout instructions over the mic (“get your hands in the air!!”). They should blow their minds with their talent and energy. Simple as that.

Other rules

A couple other items to make sure are either in the contract or discussed:

1. Talk about their attire. What will they be wearing? Will it match your vibe? Tuxedos at a casual barn wedding doesn’t make much sense, and flashy costumes with too much skin at a formal affair wouldn’t be appropriate.

2. NO DRINKING. You want them to stay hydrated. Of course. They’re working their butts off and sweating profusely. But no alcohol should be consumed. Ever. End of story.

One final note is that I personally think that a band or DJ is where you should spend your money. You want quality - you can’t skimp in this area or your party will suffer. And believe me, I’m all for budget weddings and saving money - hopefully by now you all know I’m a practical lady to a fault. But you have to pay for talent. And when it comes to DJs and bands - you need the good ones.

Marie and Alex // Katzen Arts Center Wedding, Washington, DC // DC Wedding Coordinator

I'm baaack! January, as always, has been a very busy month. But I'm kicking off my first official blog post of 2014 with my final wedding wrap-up from 2013! And what a great one to end with. Ah, Marie and Alex. Marie and Alex were truly amazing clients. They had a very unique wedding (which you know I love), and it was such fun to help them execute their wedding day! Marie and Alex started with an afternoon ceremony followed by a dessert reception at the Katzen Arts Center at American University. They then had several hours to relax, regroup, grab some dinner and then go party some more at a reception at a bar! You can see more of their bar reception at Capitol Romance. But my portion of the day was helping set-up their ceremony and afternoon reception. I really loved this structure as it not only provided beautiful light for their ceremony and photos, but it's a great cost-efficient way to still have a meaningful ceremony, a reception with your loved ones, and a rowdier party later in the evening (plus down-time with your significant other to soak in the fact that you're MARRIED!)!

Marie and Alex pseudo self-catered  - they placed orders for cupcakes, cookies, treats, hummus and veggie plates, and pies with various DC vendors (including Dangerously Delicious Pies, Cava, and Hello Cupcake). The vendors delivered the goods that morning and I helped set up the buffet with the platters and cake stands Marie and Alex provided themselves, and the rest of their decor.

And oh, their decor! The Katzen Arts Center is an awesome, really modern venue (with lots of great photo opps, as you’ll see). With gorgeous natural light and beautiful design, you really don’t need much decor. Alex and Marie decided to embrace the modern simplicity (as well as the circular form of the room) and got beautiful large balloons to place around the room as well as at the “altar” and behind the buffet. Wendy from Balloon Affairs of Frederick was excellent to work with and did a wonderful job.

I have to mention a couple of other details I really adored. Marie ordered her dried bouquet online from New Hampshire Woods Creations and it was stunning! I love dried bouquets because they last forever - as will the memories. Alex also had a best lady on his side for the ceremony - and while I unfortunately don’t have any good pictures to show it, she wore a beautiful grey dress to match the gentlemen’s grey suits. LOVED IT. Finally, Marie is a bad-ass and got her dress from The Bride's Project, a wonderful non-profit organization from her home town that helps fund programs and services at the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor.

After the ceremony we did a quick flip of the room so that people could come back after some cocktails and enjoy the tasty treats. In addition to their buffet, they also ordered a small cake topped with Marie’s grandparents wedding topper which was such a personal touch.

Their centerpieces were vases of the ribbon wands the guests later used to send off Alex and Marie.

Big congrats to Marie and Alex on their marriage!

Happy Holidays 2013

I’ve been in full-on holiday spirit mode lately. We’re hosting my entire family for the holidays (they arrive this Saturday) so I’m decking the halls and enjoying every second.

The Plannery will officially be on vacation next week - I plan to give myself a real break from work and social media while the family is in town.

So I want to wish you all a wonderful holiday season before the family arrives and I’m off in the land of christmas cookie baking, present wrapping, and - who are we kidding - drinking and merriment. Enjoy your friends, enjoy your family, enjoy your traditions, your food, your decorations - relish it all. Wishing you peace, safe travels, and lots of holiday cheer!

Happy Holidays from The Plannery!

Heather and Tyler // King Family Vineyards, Charlottesville, VA // VA wedding planner

Heather and Tyler were referred to me by a great friend who also happens to be a talented designer and created Heather and Tyler's invites (check her and her design partner out at alfie cooper). I worked as Month-Of Coordinator for Heather and Tyler and loved every minute. Not just because Tyler is an excellent chef, so our meetings were filled with bonus restaurant recommendations as well as home-made (delicious) snacks. No, these guys were just cool and fun and fab.

Plus, they gave me the chance to do my first Charlottesville wedding. They celebrated at King Family Vineyards, after a ceremony at Holy Comforter Catholic Church. King Family is stunning. Not only does it have gorgeous grounds, but it’s set up perfectly for a wedding - with excellent back-up options should the weather not cooperate (something a planner always appreciates). What really made my day was their caterer, Harvest Moon - one of the best, most well organized bunch I’ve worked with, in addition to making incredibly tasty food. This was the best vendor meal of the season by far!

This wedding was one of my favorites because it was a great mixture of down-home earthiness and beauty. Gorgeous bride with funky shoes, handsome groom in sneakers, an elegant family-style meal, delicious pie buffet with pies from Cakes by Rachel, and a fire-pit with late-night hot dogs and tater tots (tater tots!!!).

I’m going to let these beautiful pictures speak for themselves in a moment. But first a quick word on my favorite detail for this wedding. They had fresh fruits and vegetables as escort cards. Each piece was pinned with a guest’s name, and then guests were asked to bring the fruit and veggies to the table and create their own centerpiece (using beautiful wooden bowls). Love it! Love them. Enjoy!

Fruit and Veggie escort cards

P.s. I lied. My other favorite detail is that they hired someone to do close-up magic for the cocktail hour. We had him dress in a suit so he'd somewhat blend into the crowd and asked him to mingle among guests and do magic. It was really awesome. And the guy blended so well I thought he was late and called to find out where he was!

Holiday Hostess Gifts

The holidays are fast (FAST) approaching. I can’t believe it. I yelped to myself “WHATT??” the other day upon realizing there is only one free weekend before my family arrives. And so - I wanted to share some inexpensive, practical gifts (cause you know I love me some practicality) to bring to those holiday parties this year:

Modern House Wines have a line of very cute and hip wines available at Target. I picked up some “Here’s to You” to have on hand. I think the labels make for very cute gifts - and fyi, these also made Oprah and Gwynyth Paltrow’s gift guides - so that’ll either make you want it more or less. You decide. I went for it because of the price. And cause I could buy it at Target. I love Target.

Another option is to drop by your local cheese store. I happen to have Cheestique nearby and I adore them. Little known fact is that I wanted to own a cheese shop when I was a girl. Long story to be told another time, but needless to say, I love cheese shops. Pop in to yours and pick up some goodies - my favorites are Taleggio and Epoisses (for those who love the delicious and don’t mind the stinky). You don’t need to stick to cheese though - buy some cured meats, some bread, or even a lovely slate cheese board for your host or hostess.

Fabric cocktail napkins are another favorite because they’re something you’d never buy for yourself. I don’t have any. But I’d totally use them if I did. I think these from Crate & Barrel are very festive and modern without being overly cutesy and holiday-y.

I also love these silicone ice cube trays from Tovolo that create extra large cubes. These are so much more stylish for those drinks “on the rocks.” Your boozehound friends will adore them.

And why not also give them some bitters to make the perfect cocktails? I love this gift set from Scrappys

On the cheaper end, why not just make them a mix of your favorite holiday music? You already know True Blue Miracle from Christmas Eve on Sesame Street is one of my favorites. Some others include the Andrews Sisters (classic), as well as Benjamin Britton’s Ceremony of Carols. Amahl and the Night Visitors is the best, though. My mom used to play this every year and it always gives me the warm fuzzies. A beautiful Christmas story and I’m not kidding will make me cry so I have to stop talking about it right now.

Flowers are always a good standby. But why not DIY some florals? Middle Atlantic Wholesale Florist doesn’t only sell wholesale! They’re an amazing gem - drop by and they can help you find and put together whatever you need, including vases and greenery!

Headed back to my Del Ray hood, I have to recommend a pint of Frozen Custard from the Dairy Godmother. You can see their flavor forecast here. I’m dying to try the eggnog flavor. This is a can’t miss gift. Unless they’re lactose intolerant. In which case, skip it.

And finally, this is a season about giving. So why not donate to a charity in honor of your host or hostess? World Vision has a great gift catalog with amazing options include goats, ducks, clean water, or education for young women! That is what it’s all about, folks.

Happy Holidays!!!
