(un)convention 2015 recap

Photo by Betty Clicker Early last month I had the honor of attending (un)convention Brooklyn - part business development workshop, part community-building/networking, part inspiration overload, ALL feminist bad-ass wedding vendors. As their site explains it, a "coalition of progressive, equality-minded wedding professionals, who love working with cool, creative, crazy-in-love couples." YES.

I was asked to speak on a panel about "How to be a Wedding Space Disrupter" - an overwhelming, but fab topic near and dear to my heart. I was joined by Kellee Kahlil of Loverly, photographer Oriana Koren, and blogger Kate Schaefer of H&H Weddings.

I struggle with the fact that my seemingly practical and down-to-earth way of doing things - from my website design, marketing, business practices, and actual wedding planning itself - is seen as disruptive or revolutionary. Yes, it felt that way 5 years ago. It sometimes still feels that way when I run into the odd vendor here or there who responds with a thinly veiled reason as to why they don't work with LGBTQ clients. But I couldn't help feeling disbelief that so many of us around the country still feel alone in the industry, feel odd for wanting something new to be reflected, feel scared to express our true feelings. It's like when my roommate and I were called "alternative" by a preppy douche in 2003 for having short hair. Whaaa???

So the room filled of 60 wonderful vendors both gave me hope and inspiration and also made me shake my head in disbelief that it's 2015 and we need a convention to discuss this. But we do. We so obviously do. And I was so glad to be there because it re-inspired me to do more to truly change the industry - while my blog posts and my leading by example are great, I could be doing more. I could be asking those vendors who refuse to work with LGBTQ clients - Why? I could be submitting more of my diverse weddings to blogs (blog submitting in general is something I... just don't do. But now I feel like I have more of a purpose for doing it!). I could be brainstorming and partnering with more like-minded vendors to create new content, new events, and new ideas.

Mostly, I was struck with this idea that actually hit me when I became a new mother. A couple months after having my daughter, I told someone "I could hear 'you're a good mom' every day and it still wouldn't be enough." Now, I'm not saying I actually think I'm a shitty mom. But I was talking about all of the constant jabber in our ears about being the perfect mom, and you have to do this and be this and don't do that and must do that. It's tough. I like to think of myself as a fairly strong person, and those doubts seep in on a daily basis.

Now take that and apply it to the wedding industry. Couples are hearing and seeing a barrage of must-do's, have to look like this, need to do thats. It's endless. And despite way more opportunities to feel supported than we had even five years ago (like Catalyst Wedding Co, A Practical Wedding, and Offbeat Bride, to name a few), I believe those couples need the constant reminders, much like "you're a good mom," except in the form of "you do you" - you have the wedding you want, here's what really matters, stay grounded and stay real and stay you. I used to think I could do just one blog post expressing my discontent or trying to remind couples of what their true motivation should be (um, marriage anyone? That thing that happens after a wedding?). But I'm realizing now I need to consistently disrupt. I and other wedding vendors like me need to consistently add our voices to shout through the wedding industry's incessant drone.

Trying to wrap all these ideas up into a neat little package, I find myself thinking of feminism in general. That at ALL of these big life moments - adolescence, dating, getting engaged, married, buying a house, having children (or none of the above!) - we often doubt ourselves based on what society is telling us we are supposed to do or supposed to be. The only way to combat that is to remind ourselves and each other that we have choices. That you can be childless and blissfully happy. That you can propose to your boyfriend. That you can wear a yellow wedding dress. Seeing and trusting that those choices are available and valid and real are essential to change. It's incredibly hard to trust in yourself without support. If I can help one person feel confident in their choices and supported at a very stressful time of life, I may not start a revolution, but I can at least be part of one.

Jen and Steve // Carnegie Instute of Science, Washington, DC Wedding // DC Wedding Coordinator

Photo by Shandi Wallace Jen and Steve toured Carnegie Institute of Science last fall when I was running around coordinating and setting up Brittany and Dan's wedding. They briefly met me and later reached out to see if I'd help them! Jen and Steve got married at the Carnegie Institute of Science on Friday, October 30th. This awesome couple also did a killer job of adding some Halloween touches while still keeping things classy. Jack-o-lanterns were in the fireplace, her bouquet was a STUNNING dark, gothic, feather masterpiece created by Uncloudy Studio, they were introduced to "Thriller," and the place cards had a little extra bite to them (as you'll see). Also, Jen's dad MADE the cake topper and it was amazing! After a first look and some beautiful photos (by the awesome Shandi Wallace), they took full advantage of the venue by doing the ceremony in the round. Cocktails, dinner and dancing followed. The evening ended with a delicious cookie table in honor of Jen's grandmother. It was such a fun party - Jen and Steve were some of the most friendly, hilarious, wonderful couples I've worked with (and Steve can dance his a$$ off which is my very favorite type of groom). So enjoy this spooky stunner of a wedding!

The "styled" issue

I had a bit of a revelation the other day. A hosting revelation. An event epiphany, so to speak. I’ve been fairly vocal on my blog about trying to ease the pressure to be crafty, keeping things simple when it comes to party and wedding decor and DIY projects, and even sharing my own personal holiday and party decor to show that it can be easy and uncomplicated. However, I wasn’t sure where this desire to calm people the eff down about decor came from. Why was I so anti-decor and making tables and centerpieces and events look nice? I realized the other day that it’s about the motivation. It’s about staying true to WHY you want your table to look beautiful.

I attended a small event recently that was really lovely. At the event was a beautiful dessert and drinks table that was “styled” by a local event stylist.

I got the creeps.

In today’s age of instagram and twitter and blogs, I had the sneaking suspicion that this styled table was not for the guests’ enjoyment. It was to be viewed through a filter. It was to be enjoyed by those who could not be there. For those who maybe wish they’d been invited.

Now, I obviously don’t know this for a fact. And I realize I’m walking a very thin line here. Why does it matter if we make things beautiful for ourselves, for our guests, or for instagram followers? Maybe it doesn’t. But I think trying to stay as genuine as we can, in any celebration, is really important. Our motivation to host should be real. It should come from a grounded place. It should reflect the desire to meet, and celebrate, and interact and socialize - not take photos of a table with our phones. We should be motivated to please our guests, absolutely - but to the point that they feel like an effort was made, and you care - not to the point that they’re afraid to reach for a bite of food.

I’ve always had a negative reaction to the word “styled” in the wedding industry, so I realize I’m biased (when I make my dinner table look nice, I don’t tell my guests that I “styled my table” just for them). Styled shoots are not my cup of tea. I prefer real weddings. Real parties. Real people. The fact is, if it’s a good party, shit’s gonna get messy. The cake will be eaten. Crumbs will be dropped. Drinks spilled, and food consumed. I’d really love to see more “after” shots in this industry. The first-looks are great, but some of my favorite photos are of the sweaty couple at the end of the night, hair disheveled, tie undone, dress hem dirty. I realize photos of a picked-over buffet or an empty plate aren’t glamorous. I really do get it. But in our over-styled world, our curated and filtered lenses can blur things sometimes.

So I want to emphasize that if the food is good, if the drink is plenty, and the company is great, people will have a good time. You don’t need a styled dessert buffet if the pie is the bomb. You don’t need an elaborate Thanksgiving centerpiece if you have your loved ones around the table. If you want to spend 2 hours arranging decor for your next event, do it - just make sure you're doing it because it brings you and your guests true pleasure, and not so that you can get 1,000 likes on Instagram. We can’t live our lives and enjoy our celebrations in a “styled” frame of mind. Because life is beautiful and messy.

Sally and Brendan // Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, Vienna, VA Wedding // VA Wedding Planner

Guys. I sort of don't know where to start with Sally and Brendan. Perhaps they can best be described by the fact that they printed out and framed hilarious quotes from their Match.com courting days and had them on each dining table. Or the fact that they, and everyone else, laughed through their entire ceremony (especially when Brendan said, "I, Charlize Theron, take you, Sally" in reference to Sally's obsession with Ms. Theron). They are effing mad funny. Thus, they were an absolute pleasure to work with. I did partial planning with them and helped them line up some vendors, as well as month of coordination. Also, I miss them. Also, they got me one of the best thank you gifts EVER and knocked my socks off. But I digress...

They got married this past July at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, VA. Sally is stunning, but got a little bridal boost thanks to Alison Harper & Co (dude - her hair... her HAIR). After getting ready they had a great ceremony filled with the most adorable flower children you'll ever see, the aforementioned Charlize Theron reference, and pure joy. Cocktails and photos followed, and then we had a great meal and got down to the dancing (the photos of which will also show you exactly how amazing these two are). Rusty from DJ DMAC kept them on the dance floor, they served donuts from Astro Doughnuts instead of cake (though Sally surprised Brendan with a cheesehead cake from Charm City Cakes... again: rad), and everyone partied all night long. One last shout-out to Emily from LoveBlooms who did beautiful modern arrangements and some stunning modern bouquets as well. And finally, big thanks to Hannah Hudson Photography for the gorgeous photos! Sit back, get ready to laugh and smile, and enjoy: (and congrats again Charlize and Sally!)

Kim and Todd // National Museum of Women in the Arts Wedding, Washington, DC // DC wedding coordinator

Photo by Matthew D'Agostino, LoveLife Images Kim and Todd have an awesome love story. As Kim’s dad recounted during his toast, thirty-some years ago - before Todd and Kim were born - their dads met at a job they both took after college and stayed good friends from then on. They each had children around the same time and they would often joke that they wanted to set their kids up so that one day they’d become family. Fast forward - Todd started college at James Madison University a year before Kim decided to go there too.  Todd's dad told him to help Kim and her family move her into her dorm, so he did. The week before classes started, Todd and Kim met for lunch a few times and were officially dating a couple weeks after that.  So, although they've been together for 7 years, they've actually known each other for over twenty!

They had a beautiful wedding this past June, with a ceremony at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the reception at National Museum of Women In the Arts. After getting ready, their first look, and some portraits, the ceremony began. We amazingly crunched in some more photos post-ceremony before the rain really came down - it made for some windy but beautiful pics by Matthew D’Agostino of Love Life Images.

This was yet another example of a fairly traditional wedding made personal with small touches throughout the night. Kim made the NMWA venue even more beautiful with her stunning DIY projects which included escort cards on keys, Kim and Todd’s initials in flowers, and hand-made preserves as favors. Add in the beautiful florals by LynnVale Studios and delicious dining by Main Event and you had an incredible evening. After dinner, the guests danced the night away to Elan Artists’ band Nation - and had a very cool surprise set with Kim’s uncle (E Street Band’s Nils Lofgren!) and Kim’s father. The icing on the cake (pun intended) was that their wedding cake was made by their grandmother!

Corey and Peter // Pinstripes Wedding, Washington, DC // DC Wedding Coordinator

Photo by TellChronicles Corey and Peter's wedding was a total blast and right up my alley (pun intended). Their non-traditional wedding was held at the Georgetown Pinstripes - a restaurant/bar/event space/bocce court and bowling alley. Hells to the yes. Corey was a DIY master, creating tons of great little details that made their day super special and unique.

After getting ready they started their day with a first look and portraits around Georgetown - the couple met at Georgetown University. We then had the ceremony at Pinstripes, with cocktails, bocce and bowling downstairs for cocktail hour while we somewhat frantically flipped the space for the reception!

In addition to Corey's awesome DIY details, which included hand-made notecards for the guests to fill out for each of their upcoming anniversaries (I've said it before and I'll say it again - I LOVE this guest book alternative), this wedding was also FULL of surprises. Corey's Mom did a surprise "rap" toast (to Fresh Prince of BelAir, obviously). Corey and her brothers surprised the guests with a choreographed dance, followed by ANOTHER surprise dance flash mob that Corey's family had put together. It was awesome. Needless to say, dancing, dancing and more dancing followed.

Big thanks to TellChronicles for the great photos - and can we talk about how freaking hot Corey and Peter are? Hot damn. (and a shout-out to Peter's Mom for a truly awesome hat - we need more hats and fascinators at weddings, please).

Congrats again to Corey and Peter!

Lauren and Carl // Dumbarton House Wedding, Washington, DC // DC wedding coordinator

Photo by M&E Photography Lauren and Carl got married on a hot May day this past spring at the Dumbarton House in DC. It was a gorgeous mix of some traditional, classic elements (like the venue itself, and the stunning bride), with some personal, less-traditional touches (like their adorable dog walking in the ceremony, and the wedding cake their FRIEND made for them!).

After a steamy ceremony outdoors, guests moved to the side of the house (in some shade!) to enjoy cocktails and lawn games. They then were led downstairs to the tented courtyard and house for dinner and dancing. Towards the end of dinner they had some (lengthy, but lovely) toasts and then the dancing kicked in led by the Blue Tip Rhythm Revue... and the rest is history!

Congrats again to Lauren and Carl... and their awesome puppy (that bow tie collar is everything)!

Katie and Adam // All Souls Unitarian Church Wedding, Washington DC // DC Wedding Coordinator

Photo by Jessica Crews Katie and Adam had a super-awesome wedding this past May at All Souls Unitarian Church in DC. They're a great couple - we bonded initially over our very random connections: Adam's father went to the same high school I went to and grew up in my hometown, and Katie works at the same facility where my husband's grandmother lives. Very small world filled with rad people.

Speaking of rad people, Katie and Adam had some of the best and most competent friends I've ever met. When couples tell me their friends are going to handle the large task of DIYing the decor, I get concerned. I get nervous. I get anxious. I'm quite dubious and generally show up expecting to have to do most of it myself and/or fix some semi-disasters. But not with Katie and Adam. With Katie and Adam, I showed up at the venue to find their friends chilling on the stage having KICKED SOME ASS in decorating their entire reception venue with flags and cafe lights in record-breaking time. My jaw dropped to the floor and my heart leapt. These were my people.

All of which is to say do please be sure to give some mad props and slow claps when you see the beautiful photos (by Jessica Crews) of their lovely reception decor. Katie and Adam had a short but very sweet ceremony in the All Souls Church followed by cocktails in the lobby (unfortunately it started pouring down rain right when their cocktail hour started, but we rolled with it!), and the reception in the church's main hall. My Thyme served some delicious eats, and after dinner but before dancing one of Katie and Adam's friends passed around letters for all of the guests to fill out that the couple would open on their future anniversaries (1st, 5th, 10th and so on). It's an awesome alternative to a guest book and a new option I've been seeing a lot lately at weddings. I love it.

Post-dinner and some toasts, the dancing started thanks to The Pinstriped Rebel who kept the dance floor packed. Both Katie and Adam are dancers and it was such fun to see them hit the dance floor.

Congrats again, Katie and Adam!

Mariah and Rob // Meridian Hill Park Wedding, Washington DC // DC wedding coordinator

My new associate, Tarra, coordinated this awesome wedding on Memorial Day. Handing it off to her to give us more details on Mariah and Rob's wonderful DC wedding! Take it away, Tarra...

Mariah and Rob were married in Washington, DC on Memorial Day Eve this past May.  Perfect weather, gorgeous bride, excited groom, and exultant family and friends. Nothing but love hung in the air that day. Even patrons of the busy Meridian Hill Park - where the loving ceremony was held - stopped to soak up the joyous occasion.

The wedding reception for their 140ish guests was held in their BREATHTAKING condo in Adams Morgan.  Both the décor and vibe of the night was anchored around music – with ceiling to floor mobiles and chandeliers made of vinyl records.  Guitar picks and music lyrics were also scattered about throughout the unique venue along with Mariah’s DIY floral arrangements. And did I mentioned the private ROOFTOP DECK?  Please do not ask me how we managed to fit everyone up there for a sit down dinner - plus a 3-piece band, plus a dance floor, plus a bar! All I can say is man did they pick the best condo ever to call home.  Big shout outs to Rouge Catering, Allied Party Rentals, and John Farr Lighting for helping make this all possible. Oh and last but not least, kind of like cherry on top - only saltier - I’d like to thank Rappahannock Oyster for coming out and making cocktail hour all the more fun.

This was a DC wedding through and through - their love for the city was so abundantly clear. I mean come on, these two sprung for a Adams Morgan Jumbo Slice in their wedding attire almost immediately after the ceremony! And let’s not forget National Pedicab who help shuttle guests to and from the park. So DC!

It was such a pleasure working this beyond-fun and non-traditional wedding.  I must thank Stephen Gosling for brilliantly capturing the day exactly as I remember it. Congrats again to Mariah and Rob!
