Guest post on marriage

I got pretty personal over on Capitol Romance today - talking about what Fiji taught me about marriage. Please head on over there and check out my guest post - I hope you like it! Please enjoy my snorkel hair selfie as well. Keepin' it real. And in case it gets you in the marriage mood, a reminder of some past posts from my own blog about marriage and relationships:

Julia and Phil // The Inn at West Settlement Wedding, Roxbury, NY // New York Wedding Planner

Photo by De Nueva Photography This wedding was incredibly special to me. I know Julia and Phil from my college days in NYC. Julia and I performed together, both dance and musical theatre, and Phil was our tech guru, making us look and sound our best. They got in touch with me all these years later asking if I’d help them find their venue and solidify their budget, as well as do month-of coordination. Julia and Phil wanted a full-on wedding weekend in the country, so we scoured the NYC region looking for great barns that could offer multiple venues for various events throughout the weekend.

They settled on the Inn at West Settlement in Roxbury, NY. I helped coordinate their rehearsal dinner and firepit hang the night before their wedding, their entire wedding day, and their morning-after brunch. It was an exhausting but exhilarating and wonderful weekend. I have to mention that despite all my hard work, none of it would have happened without their awesome family and friends who really pitched in to make this a community event. Plus, Julia and Phil are both my ex-theatre type-A dream clients and were organized beyond belief!

The weather cooperated and the whole weekend was fantastic. Julia and Phil started with a beautiful outdoor ceremony that included live music, some relatives as their officiants, readings from friends, and a handfasting. Their cocktail hour then extended into some wonderful Irish dancing out on the lawn with fabulous live music from a fiddle and pipe player. Family style dinner in the barn followed, along with toasts and a potluck pie station. And then there was the dancing. They hired a stellar band out of Brooklyn, The Blue Vipers, who KILLED it. Julia is a dancer. A legit, working artist - so she and Phil had a lovely choreographed first dance, followed by a crowd that couldn’t keep off the dance floor. The caterer and staff were based out of the downstairs level of the barn and I’m telling you, the stomping and hooting coming from the ceiling above made me think the barn might collapse!

Brittany and Daniel // Carnegie Institute of Science Wedding, Washington, DC // DC Wedding Coordinator

Photo by Shandi Wallace How hot are Brittany and Dan, you guys? I admit, I'm a bit biased because Brittany may be one of the best curly-girl brides I've ever seen. But dang, yo. It also helps that they're two of the most pleasant, sweetest and fun people - even while planning their wedding from Indianapolis!

Brittany and Dan got married on a Friday this November at Carnegie Institute of Science, a venue I'd been dying to work in (and will hopefully work in again this January if Baby Wannen stays put). They used plum and gold as their primary design inspiration, and wanted a really romantic, candlelit evening. Spilled Milk catered a great family-style meal. Uncloudy Studio, brought in by Brittany at the last minute, KILLED it with the florals (seriously… seriously). And obviously we have to thank and give mad props to Shandi Wallace for these stunning images. I loved this wedding because at first glance it seems fairly traditional - but their super personal ceremony and vows in the round, their small DIY details (those swizzle sticks!), their adorable cutting cake, the glow sticks and sunglasses provided by the mother of the groom, all those details really spoke to Brittany and Dan as a couple.

After getting ready, doing a first look and some portraits, Brittany's Dad officiated a wonderfully personal ceremony in the round. Cocktail hour followed, then the family style dinner, a quick cake cutting, and finally dancing (led by DJ Maskell) and photo booth fun rounded out the evening. Big congrats to this awesome couple!!

Happy New Year!

2014 was an amazing year for The Plannery - we more than doubled the number of clients we worked with from 2013 and had a blast doing so. As most of you know, 2015 will be a slower year for me, what with the bebe and all - but I'm looking forward to continuing the tradition of working with kick-ass couples, and revving up for 2016! In the meantime, a look back at some of my favorite pics from all the great weddings I did in 2014 (I'm still missing a couple photos from some weddings this fall - blog posts on those to come later!). Big thanks to all the wonderful couples and vendors who made 2014 so freaking rad!

xoxo

Happy Holidays!

I wanted to take a quick moment and wish everyone a very happy holiday season! My hubby and I are taking a couple days to do a babymoon at a B&B in VA prior to Christmas - really looking forward to getting away and enjoying some of our last moments as just the two of us. As my due date looms, I will continue to be working and blogging as much as possible - but I am looking forward to the down time the holidays tend to naturally create and I hope you all take some time to relax, rejuvenate, and celebrate! Leaving you with some fantastic photos Sarah of Val & Sarah recently took of our little family (and for those of you who follow me on Instagram know, that beautiful black lab is our new puppy, Birdie). Huge shout out and thanks to Sarah… I love and adore these pics!

From our family to yours, happy holidays and happy new year!!

Non-Traditional Thanksgiving

I had a great Thanksgiving this year as I not only got to see my whole family, but they also threw me and my hubby a baby shower! More on the shower tomorrow, but first - a brief Thanksgiving recap cause I think all you lovers of things non-traditional might enjoy it. My husband rocked out a non-traditional Thanksgiving feast. As he has for the past several years, he and his brother and father went hunting and came back with goose and duck. He made an amazing goose and duck ramen as our Thanksgiving meal and it was so delicious. I decided to embrace the non-traditional aspects with the decor and do something more modern and minimalistic to match the seemingly simple ramen dish.

IMG_2255

As always, I like to go into the detail on decor to show everyone that even party and event planners can be simple and make things easy on themselves! I used a white tablecloth I already had, and reused some black and white striped runners my mother made for our wedding! I decided to drape them in a somewhat non-traditional manner and instead of doing a runner lengthwise down the table, we did them across. I grabbed some cheap chopsticks and spoons, as well as some simple black fabric napkins from World Market. I then used some leftover tags I had from a previous wedding to do simple place cards that we tied to the napkin with string I had around the house. We knew we wanted to serve sparkling wine with the ramen, so to match our new (and cheap - Crate and Barrel Outlet what what) champagne glasses I picked up some mercury glass votives and a silver tray at Michael's to add a touch of shine and some simple centerpieces.

IMG_2256

I was really happy with the result. I like keeping centerpieces minimal so that people can focus on the food and the people across from them. And it was fun to veer away from the traditional Thanksgiving decor of pumpkins and gourds and orange and earthy stuff and do something a bit more modern.

And for those who are really put off by non-traditional stuff, fear not - we had pie.

Emily and Paul // Whittemore House Wedding, Washington, DC // DC Wedding Planner

Photo by Leo Druker After I first met Emily and Paul I came home to my husband and said "I really want them to be my friends." They're just those people. So warm, so freaking funny, so great, so cool. Their family was also hilarious and awesome. I basically have a client crush on them, I’m not gonna lie.

I did partial planning with Emily and Paul - helped them find their venue and major vendors and then came back towards the end of their planning process to do month-of coordination.  Emily and Paul got married at the Whittemore House - they had a really elegant wedding but with some fun pops that matched their personalities. Studio DBI did their beautiful florals. They stuck with lush neutrals for the ceremony, but then transferred over to really colorful centerpieces for the reception. The bridesmaids wore different colored dresses and I loved the fun rainbow effect - and Emily was freaking STUNNING (can we talk about that necklace?? And more importantly, that smile??). After their (very funny and personal) ceremony, with music from the string trio Anthem, guests went upstairs for cocktail hour while we flipped the ballroom to the reception.

Emily and Paul love to throw dinner parties and they wanted their wedding to feel like one big dinner party - so Main Event helped put together a great family-style meal, complete with my personal favorite which was a starter course (rather than a salad) of a rustic antipasto platter preset on the table so guests could dig right in. After some colorful toasts, Soul Expressions kept everyone on the dance floor. Instead of cake Emily and Paul served mini desserts, cookies and donuts, and as guests were leaving, they were treated to some yummy subs from Taylor Gourmet.

Enjoy these fab pics from Leo Druker - such a great event!

Jackie and Aaron // The Farm at Broad Run wedding, Broad Run, VA // VA wedding planner

Photo by Ralph Alswang Jackie and Aaron came to me initially for venue help, but eventually we also worked together on nailing down their major vendors and month-of coordination. They were awesome. They wanted a very unique wedding and had very specific ideas about what they wanted. Helping that vision come to fruition was really fulfilling and especially seeing in-person how perfectly “them” their wedding was, and how much their friends and family embraced their day.

Jackie and Aaron got married at the Farm at Broad Run on a beautiful, unseasonably warm day in September. Their unique wedding timeline included a pre-ceremony sing-a-long “hang” which they staged in a nearby field. We rented a platform so that they’d be a bit more visable, and the caterer, A La Carte, had a welcome station with prosecco and beverages as well as some snacks. Their rabbi led the session and though I had my doubts, it was a huge hit with their guests.

Guests then proceeded to another field closer to the pavilion and tent where they held their outdoor ceremony. One of their friends serenaded them down the aisle. It was beautiful and magic. Cocktail hour followed in the pavilion - though the nearby field had also been set up with some lawn games, including a full mini-golf course (the only thing Aaron said he HAD to have) and a game of touch football also popped up. I loved that Aaron let himself enjoy the day fully and didn't give a damn about getting his suit dirty (though he did have a change of shirt, for the record).

A lovely buffet meal and some toasts under the beautiful tent followed. They then proceeded to dance their butts off under the pavilion. The dancing included a freaking adorable choreographed first dance, and an epic hora that extended out beyond the pavilion!

Later in the day they had their cake cutting (and some smashing!!), as well as s’mores by the fire.

Sarah and Robert // The Bolger Center Wedding, Potomac, MD // MD Wedding Coordinator

Sarah and Rob got married in early October at The Bolger Center in Potomac, MD. It was a slightly chilly day (with some real wind as you’ll see in the fab photos from Jenn Link), but in my opinion was still a gorgeous fall wedding!

First, we need to discuss Sarah’s dress. I haven’t had a non-white wedding dress since May 2013, people. And this gold dress was such a stunner on her and SO much fun. I adored it and I hope you do, too. There were also lots of hot guys in uniform, as both Sarah’s side of the family, and Rob himself, serve (I love that the groom wore white but the bride wore gold!).

Sarah’s family DIY’d her florals (so lush and gorgeous) and her centerpieces (autumnal, pumpkin based beauties). They had a full Episcopalian service, officiated by a dear friend of theirs. They also created a DIY photo booth of sorts for their reception - with an Instamax camera and lots of fun props! Their reception was filled with some great toasts (including a ukulele playing best man), great food, and great dancing, fueled by DJ Micah Vellian from DJ DMac and Associates.

Congrats again to Sarah and Rob!

How to Cancel Your Wedding

This July I had the unfortunate experience of helping a bride and her family handle the cancellation of her wedding - 6 days before the date.

It taught me a lot of great lessons - ones which I thought both couples and vendors could learn from - so I wanted to dive into this delicate, but real topic, and share some insight. Obviously one never wants to approach the planning of a wedding thinking about the worst-case scenarios. But whether one calls off a wedding due to cold feet or due to an act of God (hurricane, etc), those instances do sometimes happen - and it helps to be prepared.

The first is to have your contracts and vendor information organized. Have all signed contracts and vendor contact information in one easily accessible place so that you can review them and see what the next steps are - and so that you can easily pass that info on to someone else. Most likely, whatever the reason for the cancellation, you’re going to be dealing with a lot and there will be offers to help. Whether it’s your coordinator/planner, or a family member or friend stepping in to help alert vendors, it will make that transition as smooth as possible.

My main source of awe in this process was how many vendors didn’t have cancellation clauses in their contracts clearly outlining what they were to be paid in case of cancellation. Others had them but they were incredibly vague and confusing. It really surprised me. Because of this, some vendors lost out on the money they were expecting to be paid, while others had to negotiate with me and/or her father to figure out the next steps. Vendors - please oh please add a clear cancellation clause to your contract! And couples - please make sure all of your vendor contracts have a clear cancellation clause. If they don’t, ask for one to be added. The last thing you or your family will want to do if you’re dealing with the emotions of a cancellation is negotiate.

Unbeknownst to me, we also had one vendor who had never received a signed contract. Again, because of this, the vendor completely lost out on his payment (except the non-refundable deposit) - had the contract been signed, the cancellation clause would have been in place. Vendors - insist on receiving fully executed copies of your contracts! Refuse to move forward with a wedding until receiving the contract. Similarly, clients, understand that the reason vendors are asking for copies of these contracts signed is so that things are official and there is a legal document outlining services. Without a signed copy, the contract is worthless.

I also recommend to my clients that they purchase wedding insurance. Though even that may not cover ALL reasons for cancellation, it can help defray some of the costs should you need to delay or cancel your wedding. This could include loss of deposits, vendor no-shows, cancellation due to extreme weather conditions or acts of God, etc. I always tell couples that again - you don’t want to imagine it happening to you, but it does happen. A popular venue (where I actually hosted my husband’s 30th birthday party!) recently gained a lot of press because they shuttered unexpectedly, walking away with couples’ deposits and leaving them in the lurch with no venue. And let’s not forget all of the couples who lost big due to the hurricanes that hit our country recently. Wedding insurance is quite easy to purchase online from various sites such as wedsafe.com or wedsure.com (or just through your own insurance company). The couple hundred bucks is worth it for the peace of mind.

Finally, though this is somewhat off-topic, I wanted to mention cooperation clauses. Prior to this wedding, I’d never understood the need for cooperation clauses in contracts. As a planner, I couldn’t wrap my brain around someone who would engage my services and then not show up for meetings, or not respond to emails. But one of the first signs that this wedding was going to be cancelled was that the bride and groom stopped responding to my emails in a timely manner, didn’t show up for meetings, and weren’t available for phone dates we’d scheduled. Had I had the cooperation clause in my contract, I could have rightly ended things right there. Instead, I was forced to continue to TRY and do my job, despite not having any information or details on the wedding. So vendors - add it to your contract. And couples - don’t be offended if you see it in a contract!

No one wants to imagine the worst when you’re imagining one of the happiest days of your life. But as a down-to-earth planner, I’ll be the first to tell you that marriage is all about how you handle the bad and the good times. If you take these small extra precautions, those bad times won't feel quite so bad - and you'll be quickly back on your feet to start working towards the good.
