Jewish wedding

Rachel and Michael // Riverside on the Potomac Wedding, Leesburg, VA // VA wedding coordinator

Photo by Charles Archambault Rachel and Michael had a beautiful wedding at Riverside on the Potomac this past November. I must admit, I was a bit nervous at their hopes for an outdoor wedding in November - but they got lucky and we had stunning 60 degree weather that afternoon! Although the cold definitely creeped in once the sun went down, all the dancing, food and merriment kept everyone good and toasty. They started the day with a casual tisch/bedeken followed by the signing of the ketubah. A beautiful ceremony was down by the water - and Rachel hand-made their chuppah! Cocktails were back up in the stables, with dinner, dancing (and ingenious jump roping!) in the barn. We were accompanied throughout the day by the excellent band, Golem. And the evening ended with a stunning view of the super moon! Big thanks to Charlie at Charles Archambault Photography for the photos, and congrats again to Rachel and Michael!

R & E // Arena Stage, Washington DC Wedding // DC wedding planner

Photo by Jess Latos Photography R & E got married this past summer at Arena Stage, a venue I'd been dying to work in for a while now. They're a private couple so we won't be showing any photos of their faces or their guests' faces - but I still had to blog about this one cause it was so special, so much fun, and Jess Latos Photography took some stunning pics! E is Ethiopian, and R is Jewish. They wanted to plan their wedding fairly quickly, so we jumped right in! They incorporated various traditions throughout their day. My favorite was the Ethiopian cuisine  - and the wet naps that were on every table that said "Marriage is Messy"! R was also pregnant - and therefore a glowing, stunning bride. We made it through the hora without any dropping or falling incidents which was my major fear (!), so I considered the evening to be a big success!

This was one of the most beautiful weddings I've done that seamlessly incorporated different traditions - experiencing these cultures merging and celebrating together was really touching and, frankly, brought me to tears at times during the night. So enjoy what photos I'm able to share (and big thanks to Jess Latos Photography for the beautiful images) and join me in wishing R & E a huge congrats on their marriage! I'm also happy to report their new little baby joined their family this fall and is happy and healthy! Congrats again to R & E - much love to you both!

Kasey and Seth // Hotel Monaco, Washington DC Wedding // DC wedding coordinator

Photo by Love Life Images Kasey and Seth got hitched this past October at Hotel Monaco, DC - one of my favorite venues. They were an absolute delight to work with - such a friendly, awesome couple. After a first look and some shots around the hotel and across the street at the National Portrait Gallery, they did their Jewish ceremony in the semi-round, then we flipped the room while their cocktail hour took place in the Athens Ballroom. Emily from Love Blooms killed the florals - Kasey completely flipped (in a good way) when she saw how well the flowers matched her bridesmaids dresses! Elisha from Love Life Images did an amazing job capturing these two, and String of Pearls Quartet played their ceremony and cocktail hour, while DJ Dan Goldman rocked out their reception. They ended the night by giving perfectly DC treats to their guests from District Desserts.

Congrats again, Kasey and Seth!

Rebecca and Dave // Woodend Sanctuary, MD Wedding // MD wedding coordinator

Photo by Sarah Gormley Photography As some of you may have seen via Instagram, our beloved Tarra recently had a bit of a medical scare. Thankfully, she is healthy and well now, but this wedding came right in the midst of some of her health issues. We like to keep it real here, so more details below from Tarra on this magical yet difficult wedding - and yet another example of how wonderful our clients are (and how dedicated our incredible Tarra is)! Big thanks as always to Sarah Gormley for the stunning photos. She is one of my most favorite photogs and humans!

Rebecca and Dave, what can I say? They were simply too much fun. Another ideal kick-ass couple that The Plannery was fortunate enough to work with. Rebecca flat out oozes kindness and is the ultimate kindred spirit.  Dave is the epitome of calm and cool.  They are an unflappable force to be reckoned with.

Their wedding at Woodend Sanctuary was so special - Dave and his family built the chuppah themselves. Their ceremony, led by a family friend, was very comical - and they danced together halfway through the 7 circles! Add in the beautiful photos by Sarah Gormley and you get some real life magic.

Many of our couples are laid-back, which WE LOVE, but these guys definitely take the cake - and this took some weight off my shoulders, which I ended up needing that day. To know me is to know that I would never put my own needs on the table on someone else’s wedding day unless it was super serious! Doesn’t matter if I am starvin’ like Marvin or have a raging headache.  It turns out I had something pretty serious going on with my leg during their wedding. I powered through of course, but did actually find myself in the hospital the very next day!  I tell this story for two reasons. First, to let everyone know that my unexpected surgery went well and I am totally fine now!! Doing 100% better and feeling very fortunate that the issue was found and treated.  The second reason, is to point out how incredible it is to work with such compassionate people every day.   As a planner/coordinator, I get to work closely with so many couples and in that, you develop a very special and meaningful relationship - albeit short-lived at times.

On Rebecca and Dave’s amazing wedding day at the gorgeous Woodend Sanctuary, I got to experience so much joy with them even though I was in some serious pain.  On their very own wedding day, thanks to our special relationship, I took comfort in knowing that their joy was my joy and my pain was their pain.  And honestly, that is pretty damn awesome.

Rebecca and Mike // Union Station, Washington DC Wedding // DC Wedding Coordinator

Photo by Charlie Archambault This wedding - my first for 2016 - was so much fun, and was the perfect match for me. It's a great example of how weddings don't have to be all one thing or the other - super offbeat or super traditional. We're all complex people and it makes sense that our weddings are, too. From a distance, this looked like a fairly traditional Jewish wedding. Lots of guests (260), large beautiful venue (Union Station is so lovely), and many of the wonderful Jewish traditions. Look closer, however, and you'd see that they had no announcement, no cake cutting, no first dance or parents dances. Most importantly, Rebecca proposed to Mike. Which I straight-up LOVE. Here's how their engagement happened, in her own words:

We had just bought a house and knew we would get married but I am a planner and Mike is not.  I had decided it was time to get engaged if we were going to get married and that we should get married in January 2016! I started asking Mike to marry me everyday.  His typical response was "Not quiiiiiite yet".  Then, we agreed that when I had asked him 100 times, he would have to say yes.  I started asking multiple times a day and then he got smart and made a one time a day rule :) By the 100th time, he was in! Neither of us believe in a traditional "surprise" engagement (which is generally not a surprise!) or the man having to ask the woman.  These decisions are made as a couple and we wanted to throw (somewhat sexist!) tradition out the window.  I also did not want an engagement ring so we surprised both our parents with the news and started planning.  The only problem was when no one actually believed we were engaged since there was no engagement ring and no engagement story!

We NEED more of this you guys. It was such an honor to work with a couple like this and support them and their families. I swear it makes my heart grow and my bolsters my feminist spirit. It's so ridiculous that our society doesn't "believe" people are engaged because they don't have a "story" or a ring (ummm... that story above is an EXCELLENT story). So please let's all continue to break traditions we don't care about and embrace the ones we do.

Now that I got that out of the way, let's move on to the beautiful photos of this lovely day. They took some portraits at Hotel Monaco before heading over to Union Station for some more. After the photos and Ketubah signing, they had a beautiful ceremony - Rebecca's father, a rabbi, officiated! Petal's Edge did such a great job with their romantic chuppah, and I especially loved the modern arrangements for the centerpieces. Design Cuisine along with Kosher Kitchen killed it with their food and service. As you'll see, Onyx kept them dancing all night long - and Charles Archambault captured it all in these fantastic photos. Enjoy! And congrats again to my most bad-ass of couples, Rebecca and Mike!

Susannah and Zach // Hendry House Wedding, Arlington, VA // VA Wedding Coordinator

Susannah and Zach got married this past May on a gorgeous Sunday. They originally had hired me to do Month-of Coordination only, but Susannah's family suffered an unfortunate tragedy prior to her wedding, so they hired me to jump in and take on some of the extra tasks to lighten their load. It was my absolute pleasure and it was wonderful to get to see such joy on their wedding day after tough times.

Susannah and Zach had their ceremony outdoors under a DIY chuppah (which they made themselves - and nailed). After the beautiful ceremony, guests had cocktails outdoors on the Hendry House patio and then moved to the tented reception for dinner and dancing! Some details of their reception I loved included their guest book - they had guests write on blank library cards and file them away in card catalog drawers. They also got a non-traditional wedding cake from Alexandria Pastry Shop which was just gorgeous and perfect for the season. And I have to mention Susannah's dress which was a stunning modern number. I was obsessed with it - had I found it when I'd been dress shopping for my own wedding I probably would have worn it myself! She was so beautiful.

Susannah is a twin, and Zach has two twin brothers! So don't worry if you're seeing double in some of these excellent photos from Olivia Jacob. Enjoy - and congrats again, Susannah and Zach!

Shira and Graeme's VisArts Rockville, MD wedding

Shira and Graeme got married at VisArts in Rockville, MD this past June. I worked with them as a Month-Of Coordinator which was interesting because they both live in London. We communicated mainly via phone and email, and I finally got to meet this fab couple the day of the rehearsal!

VisArts is a wonderful venue - gotta say that off the bat. It’s a super fun, modern option that still has a fairly traditional ballroom-style room (with a built in dance floor to boot) that maintains its chic edge. Cocktails are held in the Artists’ Concourse and the Gallery can remain open during cocktail hour for guests to view some awesome artwork (though drinks are not allowed).

Shira and Grame did their first look in the gallery at VisArts which I thought was a beautiful backdrop - but frankly, how can you even notice the artwork when there’s such exuberance and love on this guy’s face?? That’s a man in love.

They did some beautiful portraits around Rockville (all photos shot by the always talented and always awesome to work with Amber Wilkie), and then headed to the synagogue for their ketubah signing.

Shira’s father is a Rabbi and he performed their ceremony at the beautiful B’nai Israel Congregation.

And that herbal chuppah. The chuppah, as well as the centerpiece herbs (we’ll get to that shortly), were provided by Willow Oaks Farms. That synagogue smelled AMAZING, people. Use the herbs if you’re into it - your sense of smell is the one most connected to memory so how great would it be to smell rosemary (or mint, or thyme, or whatever herb you love) for the rest of your life and think of your wedding day?

After cocktails, Shira and Graeme’s reception was beautiful, simple, with a touch of rustic. Their tables were so warm and inviting, and their centerpieces were herbs designed for guests to take them home (I may or may not have one of the leftovers on my back porch).

And then... the dancing began. Guys. This was the hora to end all horas. It was about 30 minutes of incredible movement, joy, dance, silliness, and love. Basically, the best.

And they served lamb as their main course. Apparently this was somewhat controversial, but I adored the choice and am officially recommending more couples serve lamb at their weddings. Do it. Tasty, amazing and why not stretch your guests' palates a bit?

The evening ended with a little more dancing, some final blessings, hugs, and beautifully fragrant favors clutched in the hands of some very happy guests.
